This incredibly intricate and detailed alebrije from the studio of master alebrije artist, Don Jesus Morales in the eastern Costa Region of Oaxaca represents the mighty Xolo Dog. The Xoloitzcuintli has been in Oaxaca and other parts of Western Mexico since ancient times, and is one of only two Mexican breeds who retain pre-colonial ancestry. These dogs were frequently buried with their owners so as to serve to guide their spirits into the underworld. They were highly revered by the civilizations as different as the Zapotec, Mixtec, Toltec and the Maya! These high energy dogs are extremely intelligent and sensitive, and are excellent hunters and companions.
Don Morales’ pieces are often much larger and prices range into the many thousands. We are fortunate to have four of these medium-sized alebrije to offer, making this master artist’s work available to a wider audience.
He’s perched in anticipation, just ready to give play chase or fetch! This magical dog is made of lightweight Copal wood from the Central Valley region of Oaxaca, Mexico where it was hand-carved and hand-painted with great attention to detail.
