About Us

Everywhere you look in Oaxaca there is art. Public art and private art, slick studios and outdoor workshops, elderly artists and young ones, male, female, and muxe artists working in every medium imaginable.

All art that we sell is made and purchased in Oaxaca, Mexico. There are 8 regions of Oaxaca, and most of our items come from the Valle Central (Central Valley), although some comes from Costa (Coast), and the Istmo de Tehuantepec (Isthmus of Tehuantepec), and we are slowly branching out as we can make the journeys to sell items from the Mixteca, from Cañada. Each listing will tell you the region where it was made as well as the region where it was purchased.

All of our pieces are purchased directly from the artisan or artisan family whenever possible. We ask their price, and we never haggle or bargain with them. We never ask for bulk discounts. We encourage the artists to make sure their prices ensure them a living wage. These items take weeks or months to produce, and we pay them accordingly. Sometimes we find pieces in galleries that are just so beautiful that we buy them from a gallery, but we always ask about the artists and their locations. Often we find items that we believed are priced too low, and in those cases we purchase the item at the asked price, and then when the item sells we share profits with the artist. Our goals are two: 1) to offer the best authentic indigenous Oaxacan art to homes and offices where it will be truly loved. 2) to succeed by lifting others, and not to succeed by climbing on the backs of indigenous artists. We are a blended Zapotec and American family, and we take the responsibility seriously to help the indigenous people of Oaxaca.

Josefina, our feet on the ground, travels from her home in Pochutla, Oaxaca once per month, and travels around to multiple tiny pueblos just looking for artists in their homes and workshops. Many of the artists we work with are suffering because the open markets and festivals where they usually sell their wares have been closed for Coronavirus, or galleries and the loss of income has been devastating. Now the costs of inflation from so many moving to Oaxaca during the pandemic have priced many indigenous oaxaqueños out of their neighborhoods or cities.

All of the artists we work with are indigenous Oaxaca artisans. Most of them are Zapotec, but occasionally there are Mixtec artisans as well. For many of these artists, Zapotec is their first language, and Spanish, if spoken, is a second language.

Returns

Because of the delicate and one-of-a-kind nature of our items, returns are accepted only in the case where an item is not as described, or where damage has occurred during shipping (photos and a statement will be required by the insurance company to process these claims, but the few times we have used the service, it has been a very fast turnaround).  We take great pains to ensure that all items are listed and presented accurately, including detailed write-ups, high-resolution photos, and exact measurements. If you feel an exception should be made for your purchase, please notify us within 48 hours of receipt with a detailed description of the problem, and we will try to work with you to your satisfaction.  In the event that a return is accepted for reasons other than the item not being as described or the item arriving damaged, a 20% restocking fee, and safe shipping back to us is to be paid by the buyer.
